$300.00

Saturday January 3 to Sunday January 4, 2025 | 10am — 4pm

sauna & extended hang out time available until 6pm

Join us for a two-day workshop with artist educators Kirsten Bauer and Jade Novarino at Sosta House. Spend two magical days with brush tools, ink, paint & set intentions for the new year ahead. Lunch and a glass of wine included. Accommodations for booking a room on Saturday night can be made.

CLASS:
The first day of class will consist of using the brush to create the sign painter’s Gothic alphabet and calligraphic Roman Imperials. The second day of class will consist of continued brush-painting practice, learning about layout, margins, and finishing several pieces together. We will work on a collaborative poetry banner as well as complete individual paper signs.

TEACHERS:
Kirsten Bauer is a sign painter and artist based in Portland, OR. With a background in Art History, she previously worked for arts organizations in both educational and curatorial departments. These years of study developed her eye for color, understanding of visual forms, and ability to pull from a vast inner library of visual references. She is a graduate of the LATTC Sign Graphics program - the only formal sign painting training still offered in the United States, taught continuously since 1925. The two years spent here taught her how to build, draw and brush letterforms, with a strong emphasis on layout and how to create compelling signage. To her, sign painting is the act of beautifying our landscape, a way to organize our world and permeate the everyday with handmade acts of beauty.

Jade Novarino is a scribe trained in the Pacific Northwest lineage of western calligraphy. In 2018, she studied with Paul Herrera, protege to the renowned stone cutter and sign painter, Father E.M. Catich. In her studies with Herrera, she learned brush-writing and stone carving. In this two day intensive, she will teach an abridged history of the serif (the thin line at the entrance and exit of letterforms), show you how to use a brush tool to create serifs and letterforms, make guidelines, and create a complete piece. Combined with her passion for poetry and liberation, she will guide the class in making a collaborative poetry banner using brush written Roman capitals. Brush calligraphy can be like a dance ~ she hopes this class will move you.
